“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
— 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)
In an age of shifting opinions, moral ambiguity, and spiritual confusion, the unchanging truth of God’s Word stands firm as our sure foundation. The apostle Paul, in writing to Timothy, reminded him—and us—that Scripture is not a man-made creation. It is breathed out by God Himself, carrying divine authority, eternal wisdom, and life-giving power.
Inspired by God
When Paul says that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, he uses a term that literally means “God-breathed.” This means the Bible is not merely a historical document or a collection of religious thoughts. It is the voice of God, recorded through the pens of human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Every word is intentional. Every passage has purpose. Every book is a thread woven into the grand tapestry of God’s redemptive story.
Profitable for Life and Godliness
Paul outlines four ways Scripture actively works in the life of the believer:
- Doctrine: It teaches us truth—who God is, who we are, and what God requires of us. It lays the framework of sound belief, guarding us from error.
- Reproof: It exposes our sin, confronting us when we stray from God’s path. Scripture holds up a mirror to our soul, revealing what is out of alignment.
- Correction: Not only does it show us where we’re wrong, it shows us how to make things right. It restores what has been broken.
- Instruction in Righteousness: It trains us in holy living. Like a mentor guiding an apprentice, Scripture shapes our character and conduct into conformity with Christ.
Equipped for Every Good Work
The ultimate goal is not simply to gain knowledge, but transformation. Paul says that the man (or woman) of God will be perfect—meaning mature, complete, whole—thoroughly furnished unto all good works. God’s Word prepares us to live lives that reflect His glory, love, and holiness in action. We become ready and equipped to fulfill the purpose He’s called us to, whether in ministry, family, vocation, or service.
Standing Firm in a Shifting World
Today, many attempt to redefine truth to fit cultural trends, but the Word of God remains timeless and unchanging. As believers, we must be anchored in Scripture—not just reading it occasionally, but building our lives upon it daily. It is our compass in confusion, our comfort in sorrow, our sword in spiritual battle, and our guide in every decision.
Let us recommit ourselves to the Word. Let us study it, meditate on it, obey it, and proclaim it. For in doing so, we not only grow in grace—we become vessels through whom God does good and lasting work in the world.
