“I Will Pour Out My Spirit”

Scripture: Joel 2:28–32

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

There are few passages in Scripture as powerful and prophetic as Joel 2:28–32. Spoken centuries before the birth of Christ, this divine promise paints a vivid picture of a future outpouring of God’s Spirit, a time of spiritual awakening, heavenly signs, and ultimate deliverance. These words echo through time, touching the hearts of believers who long for revival, renewal, and redemption.

The Promise of the Spirit

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…”
Joel begins with a stunning declaration: God Himself will pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Not just prophets or priests. Not just kings or chosen vessels. All flesh.

This promise signals a radical shift from the Old Covenant to the New. In the past, the Spirit came upon select individuals for specific purposes. But in the days to come, the Spirit would be freely given to anyone who believes—men and women, young and old, rich and poor, servants and handmaids alike.

This prophecy finds its first fulfillment in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples at Pentecost. Peter, standing with boldness, quotes Joel to explain the outpouring. Yet the fullness of this prophecy points even further—to our present age and beyond.

Sons, Daughters, Dreams, and Visions

God’s Spirit brings more than comfort; it brings revelation.

“…your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions…”

In times of spiritual revival, God opens the heavens and speaks to His people in supernatural ways. Through prophecy, dreams, and visions, He gives direction, encouragement, correction, and hope. These gifts are not bound by age, gender, or social class. They are the fruit of a Spirit-filled life, signs that God is at work among His people.

Today, we see this happening around the world—children speaking with wisdom beyond their years, elders dreaming divinely inspired dreams, and youth catching vision for ministry, missions, and revival. These are the birth pains of a coming Kingdom.

Wonders in the Heavens and Earth

“And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood…”

These apocalyptic signs are both literal and symbolic. They speak of great upheaval—spiritual, political, and natural. They are warnings, reminders that the Day of the Lord is near. God, in His mercy, shakes the world so that people might awaken to eternal realities.

In our time, as natural disasters increase, wars rage, and cosmic signs capture headlines, we must remember: God is not silent. He is calling humanity to repentance and faith.

The Call to Salvation

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered…”

Here lies the heart of God’s message: Salvation is available to all who call on Him. In a world darkened by sin, shaken by judgment, and desperate for hope, this invitation rings out like a trumpet blast.

No one is beyond reach. No one is too far gone. Whether Jew or Gentile, rich or poor, saint or sinner—all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. This promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and it continues to this day through the preaching of the Gospel.

In the Remnant Whom the Lord Shall Call

Even in the midst of judgment, God has a faithful remnant—those who hear His voice and respond. They are the ones who burn with holy fire, who walk in truth, who cry out for revival. This remnant is not hidden; they are the salt and light of the earth, empowered by the Spirit to stand in dark times.

Conclusion

Joel’s prophecy is not just a glimpse into ancient Israel’s future; it is a roadmap for the Church today. We are living in the age of the Spirit’s outpouring, the age of supernatural signs, and the age of divine invitation.

Let us be among those who dream dreams and see visions. Let us cry out for the Spirit’s power. Let us proclaim the message of salvation to all who will hear. And above all, let us be ready—for the great and terrible Day of the Lord is near.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)
