Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14–16
Introduction
We live in a world marked by uncertainty, temptation, and constant pressure. Many Christians struggle under the weight of trials, wondering if anyone truly understands what they are facing. Hebrews 4:14–16 speaks directly into this reality with a powerful and comforting truth: we have a Great High Priest—Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
This truth is not abstract theology. It is deeply personal and meant to shape how we live, pray, and endure.
Jesus, Our Great High Priest
Jesus is not distant or detached from our lives. Scripture calls Him our High Priest—the perfect mediator between God and man. Under the Old Covenant, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year to offer sacrifices for sin. That work was temporary and repeated year after year.
Jesus, however, offered Himself once and for all. After His sacrifice, He passed through the heavens and now sits at the right hand of the Father, continually interceding for us (Romans 8:34). Because of this finished work, the writer of Hebrews urges believers to “hold fast our profession.” In other words, do not let go of your faith.
No matter the pressure, persecution, or temptation, we are called to stand firm. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in the One who represents us before God.
He Understands Our Weakness
Hebrews 4:15 reveals a remarkable truth about Jesus: He is touched by the feeling of our weaknesses. He knows what it is to live in a fallen world. He experienced hunger, weariness, sorrow, rejection, and grief. He faced temptation in every way common to humanity, yet He never sinned.
This means Jesus understands your struggle. When temptation feels strong, He understands. When you are exhausted or discouraged, He understands. When your heart is heavy, He understands. Yet unlike any human helper, He remained sinless, making Him the perfect advocate on our behalf.
We do not approach a Savior who merely observes our pain—we come to One who entered into it.
Come Boldly to the Throne of Grace
Because Jesus is our High Priest, Scripture gives us an invitation that would have been unthinkable under the Old Covenant:
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
This is not a throne of fear or condemnation. It is a throne of grace. We are invited to come boldly—not because we are worthy, but because Jesus is. Through Him, mercy is available. Grace is ready. Help is promised in every time of need.
Whether you are battling sin, facing a crisis, or simply overwhelmed by life, you are not turned away. The way is open.
Hold Fast and Draw Near
These truths must anchor our souls:
- Jesus is our Great High Priest.
- He understands our weaknesses.
- He conquered sin and death.
- He invites us to come boldly for grace and mercy.
Do not let go of your faith. Hold fast to what you have confessed. And when life presses in, do not retreat—draw near. Run to the throne of grace. There, you will find everything you need.
