They were among Israel\u2019s most persistent enemies throughout the Old Testament period, often opposing God\u2019s people during the time of the Judges and the early monarchy (especially Saul and David).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s a breakdown of who they were and what the Bible and history tell us about them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origin of the Philistines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Bible first mentions the Philistines early in Genesis (Genesis 10:13\u201314), as descendants of <strong>Mizraim (Egypt)<\/strong> through <strong>Casluhim<\/strong>, from whom came the Philistim. However, archaeology and other historical records suggest they were part of a group known as the <strong>Sea Peoples<\/strong>, who migrated from regions around the <strong>Aegean Sea (possibly Crete or Cyprus)<\/strong> and settled on the coast of Canaan around the <strong>12th century BC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These settlers brought with them distinct cultural and technological practices\u2014especially in pottery, weapons, and architecture\u2014that were different from the Canaanites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Land of the Philistines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Philistines occupied <strong>five major city-states<\/strong>, often referred to as the <strong>Philistine Pentapolis<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Gaza<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Ashkelon<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Ashdod<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Ekron<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Gath<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Each city had its own ruler or \u201clord,\u201d but they often worked together in alliances\u2014especially during times of war against Israel (Joshua 13:3; 1 Samuel 6:17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conflicts with Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Philistines frequently appear in the Bible as <strong>Israel\u2019s chief adversaries<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">In the <strong>time of the Judges<\/strong>, they oppressed Israel repeatedly (Judges 3:31; 10:7; 13:1).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Samson<\/strong>\u2019s life and mission were centered around fighting the Philistines (Judges 13\u201316).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">During the reigns of <strong>Saul and David<\/strong>, the Philistines were a constant military threat (1 Samuel 4\u201331; 2 Samuel 5:17\u201325).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The most famous Philistine was <strong>Goliath of Gath<\/strong>, the giant warrior defeated by <strong>David<\/strong> (1 Samuel 17).
