They are best known in the Bible for their <strong>deceptive treaty with Joshua<\/strong> and the Israelites during the conquest of Canaan. Their story is found primarily in <strong>Joshua chapters 9 and 10<\/strong>, and they appear again in later Old Testament history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origins and Location<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Gibeon<\/strong> was a <strong>Hivite<\/strong> city, one of the Canaanite peoples living in the land before Israel\u2019s arrival (Joshua 9:7).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">It was part of a confederation of cities that included <strong>Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim<\/strong> (Joshua 9:17).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Archaeologically and biblically, Gibeon was located in the <strong>territory later assigned to the tribe of Benjamin<\/strong> (Joshua 18:25).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Deceptive Treaty with Joshua (Joshua 9)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When Israel began conquering Canaan under Joshua\u2019s leadership, the fame of their victories spread quickly. The nearby kings prepared for war\u2014but the Gibeonites took a different approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Deception:<\/strong><br>The Gibeonites disguised themselves as travelers from a distant land. They wore old clothes, carried moldy bread, and presented themselves as ambassadors from afar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Their Goal:<\/strong><br>They sought to <strong>make peace with Israel<\/strong>, fearing destruction like that which fell upon Jericho and Ai.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Israel\u2019s Mistake:<\/strong><br>Joshua and the elders <strong>did not ask counsel of the LORD<\/strong> (Joshua 9:14). Believing the story, they made a <strong>peace treaty<\/strong> with the Gibeonites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The Discovery:<\/strong><br>Three days later, Israel discovered that the Gibeonites were actually <strong>neighbors<\/strong> living within the land promised to Israel. Yet, because of their oath before God, Israel <strong>could not destroy them<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Their Servitude<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As punishment for their deceit, Joshua declared that the Gibeonites would become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201chewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD\u201d (Joshua 9:27).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This meant they would serve the Israelites and assist the priests in maintaining the worship system at the tabernacle \u2014 a lasting role of subservience but also one of proximity to God\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Battle for Gibeon (Joshua 10)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When neighboring Amorite kings learned that Gibeon had made peace with Israel, they attacked the city.<br>The Gibeonites called for Joshua\u2019s help, and he <strong>came to their defense<\/strong>. God miraculously intervened:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">He <strong>sent hailstones<\/strong> upon the enemy armies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">He <strong>made the sun stand still<\/strong> until Israel won the victory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This battle became one of the most dramatic demonstrations of God\u2019s power in Israel\u2019s early history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Later Biblical References<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>2 Samuel 21:<\/strong> During King David\u2019s reign, a famine struck Israel because King Saul had earlier violated the covenant and <strong>killed some Gibeonites<\/strong>. To atone for Saul\u2019s sin, David sought to make restitution to them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Nehemiah 3:7:<\/strong> Centuries later, Gibeonites are mentioned among those who helped <strong>rebuild the walls of Jerusalem<\/strong>, showing their long-term integration into Israelite society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spiritual Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The story of the Gibeonites carries several moral and theological lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The importance of seeking God\u2019s counsel<\/strong> before making decisions (Joshua 9:14).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>The sanctity of oaths<\/strong>\u2014Israel honored their treaty because it was made in God\u2019s name, even though it came through deceit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>God\u2019s mercy and inclusion<\/strong>\u2014despite their trickery, the Gibeonites were spared and ultimately came to serve in God\u2019s sanctuary, symbolizing that even Gentiles could find a place near His presence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gibeonites were a Canaanite people who lived in the land of Gibeon, a city located northwest of Jerusalem.
