They were close relatives of the Israelites, with a long and complicated relationship marked by both kinship and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to the Bible, the Ammonites descended from <strong>Ben-ammi<\/strong>, the son of <strong>Lot<\/strong> (Abraham\u2019s nephew) by his younger daughter (Genesis 19:36\u201338).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cThus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father&#8230; and the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.\u201d<\/em> (Genesis 19:36, 38)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This means the Ammonites and Israelites were distant relatives \u2014 both coming from the line of <strong>Terah<\/strong>, through <strong>Abraham and Lot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Location<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Ammonites settled in a region called <strong>Rabbah of the Ammonites<\/strong> (modern-day Amman). Their territory was east of the Jordan River, bounded roughly by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The <strong>Arnon River<\/strong> to the south (bordering Moab),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The <strong>Jabbok River<\/strong> to the north (bordering Gilead), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The <strong>Arabian Desert<\/strong> to the east.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This land was rich for grazing and farming, but also strategically located along trade routes, giving Ammon considerable economic strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Relationship with Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Although related by blood, the Ammonites were <strong>often enemies of Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>During the Exodus<\/strong>, the Ammonites refused to help the Israelites and denied them passage (Deuteronomy 23:3\u20134).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>In the time of the Judges<\/strong>, they oppressed Israel for 18 years until Jephthah defeated them (Judges 10\u201311).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>During King Saul\u2019s reign<\/strong>, Nahash the Ammonite attacked Jabesh-gilead but was defeated by Saul (1 Samuel 11).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>King David<\/strong> fought them when they humiliated his ambassadors (2 Samuel 10). David\u2019s army besieged and conquered <strong>Rabbah<\/strong>, and the Ammonites became tributaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Religion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Ammonites worshiped the god <strong>Milcom<\/strong> or <strong>Molech<\/strong>, often associated with <strong>child sacrifice<\/strong> (1 Kings 11:5, 7). This idolatry was a major reason they were condemned by the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><em>\u201cFor Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.\u201d<\/em> (1 Kings 11:5)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prophetic Judgment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The prophets frequently spoke against Ammon for its cruelty toward Israel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Jeremiah 49:1\u20136<\/strong> condemns Ammon for seizing Israelite territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Amos 1:13\u201315<\/strong> rebukes them for brutal violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Ezekiel 25:1\u20137<\/strong> foretells their destruction and mockery by surrounding nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These prophecies were fulfilled when <strong>Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon<\/strong> and later <strong>the Nabataeans<\/strong> conquered the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Later History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After the Babylonian period, the Ammonites faded from prominence.
