Which Bible Version Should I Choose?

This is a question many new Christians ask, and it’s a good one. If you ask several Christians, you may hear several different answers—and that’s okay. Choosing a Bible is not about finding the perfect version, but about finding one that will help you grow, understand God’s Word, and walk closely with Him.

There are a few helpful things to consider as you decide. What Bible does your church usually use? Are you planning to join a Bible study group? Do you want something that is easy to read, or are you hoping to study Scripture more deeply and carefully? Each of these can guide your choice.

With that in mind, here are a few pastoral suggestions.

If you are new to the Bible or not yet familiar with Scripture, the New Living Translation (NLT) can be a wonderful place to start. It reads smoothly, almost like a story, and helps you grasp the meaning of the passages without getting lost in difficult language. It remains faithful to the original message while being very accessible.

If you feel called to deeper study, the New King James Version (NKJV) or the King James Version (KJV) are excellent choices. These translations stay very close to the original manuscripts and are especially helpful when studying doctrine or comparing passages carefully. Alongside these, a Strong’s Concordance can be a valuable tool for understanding word meanings and original language usage.

If you use a computer, there are also some excellent free Bible study programs available. I personally recommend e-Sword and Bible Analyzer—both are reliable, easy to use, and rich with study resources.

And if you prefer reading on your phone, simply search your app store for “Christian Bible” apps. You’ll find many free options that include multiple translations, reading plans, and helpful study tools.

Above all, remember this: the best Bible is the one you will read regularly, prayerfully, and with a willing heart. God is faithful to speak through His Word, and He will guide you as you seek Him.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
